Maximizing World-scale Impact
As a proud member of the Effective Altruism network, EA Ventures exists to incentivize and support projects with global impact, providing funding and strategic guidance to individuals who want to drastically improve the world.
Most angel networks and VC funds work toward capturing value, but not necessarily creating it. The world doesn't need another messaging app. At EA Ventures we care about one thing: creating the most social value.
Evidence-based nonprofit research reveals that an investor or philanthropist can have 10x, 100x, or even 1000x more impact by supporting the few most effective projects. The challenge for funders is to identify these projects at an early stage and back them. EA Ventures strives to meet this challenge by providing our funder team with the highest-impact opportunities, vetted with scientific rigor.
Project Selection and Support
What we support
EA Ventures practices radical cause-neutrality: we are open to any project that addresses the following factors:
Importance. If we made more progress on this problem, by how much would the world become a better place? We take on large-scale problems.
Neglectedness. The best solutions are often not obvious. We concentrate on causes where directing additional resources achieves substantial impact.
Tractability. We work on problems where progress has reasonable, measurable prospects.
Funded initiatives may take the form of new nonprofit or for-profit startups, research endeavors, projects from existing organizations, and collaborations between organizations.
how we support
Our funding range will cover the needs of the majority of early-stage projects. In addition to funding, we provide ample connections for any need an entrepreneur might have from the international Effective Altruism network - including talent, mentorship, strategic consulting, partnerships, and incubation. We believe this latter perk far outweighs funding, since entering the Effective Altruism community is akin to suddenly earning the support of thousands of experts, influencers, and fellow entrepreneurs around the world.
While EA Ventures practices complete cause-neutrality, we consider the three domains listed below to be especially high-leverage areas for saving lives or reducing suffering.
While there exist many high-profile enterprises for aiding the world's global poor, the scale of the problem remains vast. With the advent of lean, evidence-based interventions like GiveDirectly, we are optimistic about future projects addressing poverty.
The Future of life
Existential risks threaten all present and future beings. We encourage the development of projects and social movements intended to mitigate these risks and safeguard the future of life on Earth and beyond. Essential to these endeavors are related projects that effect large-scale grassroots support through movement-building and social enterprise.
Our increasing technological prowess bestows upon us the responsibility of benevolent custodianship for our fellow beings. Factory farms remain the world's largest source of human-caused, unnecessary and easily avoidable suffering. We support interventions designed to improve the well-being of animals who cannot advocate for themselves.
